With the Seattle Mariners defeating the Texas Rangers 1-0 in Seattle on Sunday, that opened the door for the Astros to win the AL West simply by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks. Fortunately for the Astros, they already had an 8-0 lead.
Houston wins their their 3rd straight AL West title, and have won 6 of their last 7 American League West titles, with the Oakland A's winning in the 2020 COVID-shortened season.
The Astros clinched a postseason spot with their victory on Saturday night, but needed some help to win the AL West. The Texas Rangers led the division for much of the year, and simply needed to split their series in Seattle, but instead dropped three out of four.
The Astros will get a first round bye in the MLB Playoffs, and will host the ALDS starting next Saturday at home at Minute Maid Park.
