Your Houston Cougars are headed back to the Sweet 16, their sixth consecutive trip to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Houston beat Gonzaga 81-76. This edition of Kelvin Sampson's squad plays their hard nosed, trademark defense, but also can fill up the basket, with plenty of great players adding to the offense.
On Saturday, it was LJ Cryer leading the way, hitting several three-pointers, while Joseph Tugler had a double-double, and J'Wan Roberts and Emanuel Sharp also scored in double digits. Things got hairy late as Gonzaga cut into the Coogs lead, but Houston held on for the hard fought victory.
The 1-seeded Coogs advance to next weekend, where they will take on 4-seed Purdue, who knocked off McNeese State on Saturday. The Sweet 16 matchup will take place in Indianapolis for the Midwest Regional, just a one-hour drive from Purdue, which will make for a heavy Boilermaker crowd.
