Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim Hits, Kills Man In Fatal Accident

Jim Boeheim

UPDATE: Jim Boeheim Releases Statement:

Boeheim’s statement read: “I am heartbroken that a member of our community died as the result of last night’s accident. Juli (Boeheim) and I extend our deepest sympathies to the Jimenez family. Out of respect for those involved, I will not be providing further comment at this time.” (via Syracuse.com)

EARLIER: Jim Boeheim struck and killed a man walking outside of his vehicle on Interstate 690 around midnight after Syracuse beat Louisville. The man was in his 30's with four other people after their car crashed for unknown reasons. Boeheim came back with a clean alcohol test and was cooperating with police.

According the 13 Wham out of New York, here are the details:

The crash happened just before 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday on I-690 Eastbound just before the Thompson Road exit.
Investigators say a car lost control and hit a guardrail. They say the people in the car got out and walked on the highway within "close proximity to that vehicle."
Police say Boeheim noticed the disabled car and tried to avoid the vehicle which was in the middle of the road. That's when police say Boeheim hit 51-year-old Jorge Jimenez, of Syracuse, who was standing on the side of the road.
Jimenez was taken to Upstate University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Sources say Boeheim called 911, and police told CNYCentral he was fully cooperative with investigators as well as the other driver.
They tell us this "seems to be a tragedy."
I-690 was shutdown at South Midler Ave. for several hours while crews investigated the crash.
