Source: Texans signing linebacker Sione Takitaki

The Texans plan to sign veteran linebacker Sione Takitaki, per a league source, after a successful workout.

They worked out Takitaki and linebacker Jahlani Tavai after linebacker Jake Hansen injured his ankle. 

 Hansen avoided a potential season-ending injury, per a league source, but he is sidelined indefinitely. The injury, per a source, looked much worse than it was.

 "We'll see, he's kind of week to week," Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. "We'll see how he progresses throughout camp.

Takitaki and Tavai worked out one day after the Texans worked out defensive tackle Alec Anderson, running backs Hassan Haskins and Alexander Mattison and wide receiver Montrell Washington. None of those players were immediately signed to a contract.

Takitaki, 31, has previous stints with the Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings.

Takitaki (6-foot-1 245 pounds) has recorded 292 career tackles, four sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and one touchdown.

A former Browns third-round draft pick from BYU, Takitaki played two seasons for the Patriots. 

He spent time last season on the Vikings' practice squad. He played in three games and had three tackles

In 2024, he had 21 tackles for the Patriots in four starts. He had a career-high 71 tackles in 2022 for the Browns.

The Texans hosted defensive tackle Mario Edwards Jr. on Saturday for a visit. He was released in March with a failed physical designation after rupturing his pectoral last season.

Edwards was signed a year ago to a two-year, $9.5 million contract.

Edwards, 32, had 13 tackles, 1 1/2 sacks, two tackles for losses and four quarterback hits last season for the Texans before getting hurt.

Edwards had 31 tackles two seasons ago and recorded 31 tackles, three sacks, eight quarterbacks hits and three tackles for losses.

Edwards wasn't immediately signed to a contract Saturday as the Texans evaluate whether they will add more to the defensive line.
