Texans Activate Brian Cushing to the 53-Man Roster

The Houston Texans have activated Brian Cushing from the Exempt Commissioner's list after getting a one-week roster exemption after the linebacker served his 10-game suspension for his second violation against the NFL substance abuse policy. Cushing returned last week for the Texans and went through a full week of practice and even traveled with the team to Tennesee on Sunday.

Bill O'Brien feels Cushing will be ready for this weekend's game against San Francisco.

“I think it’s trending toward that, yeah," O'Brien said of Cushing playing this weekend. "I think it’s trending toward that. We’ll kind of get back with him today and kind of see how last week went and then we’ll go from there.”

The Texans had an open roster spot after the Texans placed Brennan Scarlett on the injured reserve and with December 4th being the final day of the week-long exemption the Texans received, they made the move. With the defense lacking veteran leadership, the Texans see the value of bringing back one of their most experienced defenders in franchise history back to the team.

“Absolutely," O'Brien on if Cushing could bring something to the defense.

O'Brien continued, "His leadership, number one, his knowledge of our defense, his experience playing in our defense, his toughness. All of those things could definitely help our defense.”

With young players in place at inside linebacker with Benardrick McKinney, Zach Cunningham and Dylan Cole talking the bulk of the defensive snaps expectations are that there could be a position change in place for the veteran linebacker.
