What’s Next For The Astros?

The countdown is officially on for Spring Training as we are into the new year. The Astros have the majority of their World Series winning roster returning. They also made a splash by adding José Abreu at first base. So what’s next for the champs and are they done adding to their roster for 2023? Let’s look through some areas of potential additions.

Still a free agent, you cannot rule out a return of Yuli still. The Astros could still use some help in a utility role and he could still come back in that spot, but I would be somewhat surprised if he does. Now that the first base market is getting very thin with Eric Hosmer reportedly heading to the Cubs, I would imagine Yuli might have a shot at landing at least a platoon role somewhere before spring training starts.

Catcher Depth

Count me as a bit surprised that catching depth still has not been addressed. I just would be surprised if they decided to role with Korey Lee behind Martín Maldonado this season. The market is very thin on options, but Jorge Alfaro is probably the name to watch the most.

At this point it feels like it will be the Chas McCormick show in center this year and that is completely fine. He’s a league average player and that’s completely fine. You cannot be above average at every single position. The options on the free agent market at this point stink, the only way to really upgrade would be in trade, which they probably do not have what they need to make a big move. Get ready for a year of the Chas Chomp more than ever before.

Standing pat from where they are is completely fine. If health falls their way again this season, they’re the clear favorite to win the American League once again.
