Astros set initial Player Pool, includes 30 pitchers, 26 position players

The Houston Astros announced their initial Player Pool, a group of 56, which includes 30 pitchers and 26 position players. The Player Pool consists of players who will be eligible to play for them in the Major Leagues in 2020. This Player Pool can change throughout the season, as the Astros will be able to add and subtract from this group through standard transactions, i.e. waiver claims, free agent signings, releases, and trades. A club’s Player Pool can consist of up to 60 players but cannot exceed that number.

On Opening Day, the Astros will set an active roster, pulling all players on the roster from their Player Pool. The remaining players that do not make the Major League roster will continue training at an alternate location and can be recalled throughout the season under the normal option and recall rules.

The Astros Player Pool is scheduled to report to Spring Training this week, but will be split at two different locations. The team will announce Spring Training report dates, workout groups, workout times and credentialing information in the coming days.
