After losing their draft picks in the first and second round of the limited five-round 2020 MLB Draft due to the alleged cheating scandal, the Astros used their 72nd overall pick on high school pitcher Alex Santos. The Bronx native said he grew up a Yankees fan, but now he will be an Astros fan.
"I was a little shocked but I was really excited," Santos said after being selected. "I can't wait to go out there and show you guys what I've got."
At the tail end of the third round with the 101st selection, the Astros selected Vanderbilt pitcher Tyler Brown. Brown had been one of the better closers in college baseball, but said on a podcast in April he would be returning to Vanderbilt in 2021. The Astros will likely have to negotiate a really good deal with Brown to sway him away from returning to college.
With the 131st overall pick in the 4th round, the Astros selected Tennessee outfielder Zach Daniels. Daniels started 16 of Tennessee's 17 games, where he hit .357, leading the Vols with 18 RBI and four homeruns.
Lastly, with the 160th selection, the last pick of this year's draft in the fifth round, the Astros selected infielder Shay Whitcomb from UC San Diego,
