HOUSTON, TX - Astros RHP Justin Verlander underwent ulnar collateral reconstructive surgery (Tommy John) on his right elbow yesterday, Astros General Manager James Click announced.
Recovery time for the surgery is expected to be approximately 12-14 months. Verlander was limited to just one start in 2020, an 8-2 win over Seattle on July 24, which was Opening Day (6 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 7 SO).
Since joining the Astros on Aug. 31, 2017, Verlander is 43-15 in 74 starts with a 2.45 ERA and 640 strikeouts in 477.0 innings pitched. In that span, he leads the AL in wins, ERA, opponents avg. (.183) and WHIP (0.83). In 2019, he became the fourth Astros pitcher to win the Cy Young Award (21-6, 2.58 ERA, 300 SO, 0.80 WHIP).
