On Wednesday, the Houston Astros held a press conference to announce a long-term extension with star second baseman Jose Altuve. The 8-time All-Star and 6-time Silver Slugger will remain in Houston through the 2029 season. His new deal will start in 2025 and is worth $125 million.
Owner Jim Crane spoke with reporters on Tuesday and said it is a big deal for the franchise to have Altuve retire an Astro. Manager Joe Espada told Altuve he can't wait to write his name in the lineup for the next five or six years.
Altuve's agent Scott Boras said of Altuve: "His greatness is a mystery because it's never ending." Boras also said the length of the contract is important because it gives Altuve a chance to surpass 3,000 career hits.
Also during the press conference, Astros VP of Communications & Marketing Anita Sehgal presented Altuve with a proclamation from the city of Houston and Mayor John Whitmire officially naming it "Jose Altuve Day" in Houston. With it being 2/7, it coincides with Altuve's jersey number 27.
