Texans Tender Restricted Free Agent LB Brennan Scarlett

The Houston Texans have tendered restricted free agent linebacker Brennan Scarlett. The Texans placed an original tender on Scarlett worth $2,025,000. Scarlett was signed a rookie free agent after the 2016 NFL Draft out of Stanford.

Last season was Scarlett’s best season in a Texans uniform appearing in 12 games but he helped on both special teams and defense. He filled in at inside linebacker when the Texans ran into injuries and he ended up posting 18 total tackles with 3 pass deflections, 1 forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He also had a key interception against the Denver Broncos helping turn the tide to the Texans favor.

Scarlett has the ability to play both outside and inside linebacker and now after the Texans placing the tender on him, teams can still offer him a deal if they chose to. He can negotiate with any club through a certain date. If the restricted free agent accepts an offer sheet from a new club, his old club has "right of first refusal," a five-day period in which it may match the offer and retain him, or choose not to match the offer. If an offer sheet is not executed, the player's rights revert to his old club the day after negotiations must end.
