Gerrit Cole struck out 10 and gave up one earned run but that was not enough as the Astros fell to the Rays, 4-2.
The Rays scored three of their four runs in the 3rd inning when Aledmys Díaz committed a throwing error with two outs to extend the inning.
Cole’s final line: 6.0 IP 5 H 4 R 1 ER 0 BB 10 K and 1 HR. Héctor Rondón and Josh James pitched an inning a piece combining for 3 Ks while surrendering one hit.
Michael Brantley recorded two more hits with two RBI to lead the way offensively for Houston. Josh Reddick went 1-4 in his season debut and Yuli Gurriel had another hit in the loss.
Collin McHugh will get the nod tomorrow night against the Rays. First pitch is 5:10pm CT.
