Gerrit Cole struck out 11 and Aledmys Diaz hit a home run to help the Houston Astros beat the Seattle Mariners 3-2, Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Astros swept the M's and record their ninth straight win. The win also secured their third straight sweep.
Cole tossed six innings allowing only four hits. He has thrown at least six innings in each of his four starts this season. His final line: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 11 K, and 1 HR. Cole recorded his first win of the season. Hector Rondon, Ryan Pressly and Roberto Osuna combined to throw three innings, did not allow a hit and struck out four. Osuna got the save for his 7th of the year.
Offensively, Michael Brantley led the way with two hits and two RBI. Diaz hit his home run in the top of the 7th inning which broke the 2-2 tie. The solo shot would eventually be the game winner.
Houston improves to 11-5 on the season and will begin a two game set with the A's from Oakland on Tuesday. Collin McHugh will take the mound for the Astros in game one. First pitch will be at 9:07pm CT.
