14 innings and over five hours later, the Astros defeated the Mariners, 8-7. With the victory, Houston won the series against Seattle, 3-1.
Myles Straw hit a lead-off triple to begin the 14th inning and was then knocked in by a Yuli Gurriel sac-fly. Chris Devenski found himself in trouble in the bottom half of the 14th by loading the bases but was able to get a fly-out to end the game. Devenski received his first win of the season Thursday night.
Justin Verlander threw 6.1 innings and left with a 5-3 lead. He gave up three earned runs on five hits while striking out seven. The Mariners chipped away at the lead and eventually gave Roberto Osuna his first blown save of the season as they tied the game at six in the bottom of the 9th. Josh Reddick hit a pinch-hit sac-fly to put the Astros ahead 7-6 in the 10th but Seattle answered right back in the bottom half of the inning to tied the game at seven which led to Straw's triple in the 14th.
Alex Bregman hit his 18th home run of the season and went 3-6 with an RBI. Robinson Chirinos went 1-3 with three runs scored, two RBI and four walks. His lone hit was a two-run blast for his fourth homer in four consecutive games. Jack Mayfield also hit a home run which was his first as a big leaguer.
Houston returns home Friday night to open up a weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles. Gerrit Cole will take the mound in search of his sixth win of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm.
