Giannis and the Milwaukee Bucks are now NBA champions and deservedly so. Giannis balled out putting up historic numbers in the Bucks 4-2 series win over the Phoenix Suns. He finished up Game 6 by dropping 50 points and 14 rebounds and hoisted up the Finals trophy and Finals MVP. And, the best part? He didn't need a super team to do it. He even said so himself and took a jab at super teams while he was at it.
I picked the Suns to win it in 6 and, honestly, I'm really glad I was wrong. Giannis showed that he is one of the best players in the world by playing old school bully ball and man it was a joy to watch. The world of the giants in the NBA was considered dead by many and many teams have shown that outside shooting is the way to play now. While Giannis can definitely hit a three from time to time, he has raised the bar when it comes to the role and legend of the big man down low. And, again, he didn't need a super team to do it. Because, Giannis is THE Bucks. It's his team and he proved that by being such a presence down low, it opens up the floor for the rest of his team to shoot from long range. Khris Middleton is not a superstar by any means but he comes up big when he needs to. The rest of the Bucks, all role players who do their part and do it well. No other super star in sight. And, that's the way it should be.
This NBA Finals was a win not only for small markets, but, also for people like me who are against the super team idea. Time will tell if Giannis can do it again, but, for now, let's all just enjoy this moment.
