HOUSTON – The University of Houston Football program will kick off its 2019 season in a prime-time showdown at Oklahoma during Labor Day weekend after the season opener was moved to Sunday, Sept. 1, Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman announced Thursday.
The game will be televised at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 1, on ABC on the final Sunday before the NFL regular season begins. It was originally scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 31, but administrators chose to move the game date.
“Making this schedule change was an opportunity for our program to play on national television,” Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said. “While fans’ travel plans may need to be adjusted, we hope that playing this game on Labor Day weekend will help alleviate some of those issues.”
The game will begin the 74th season of Houston Football and the first under Head Coach Dana Holgorsen, who joined the Cougars in January after compiling a 61-41 record in eight years at West Virginia.
Oklahoma owns a 2-1 lead in the all-time series against the Cougars, but Houston can boast of the most recent success after taking a 33-23 win during the Advocare Texas Kickoff inside NRG Stadium in Houston on Sept. 3, 2016.
