Houston Cougars Capture Two American Honors; Big Game Ahead vs SMU

HOUSTON – Houston Football brought home two weekly American Athletic Conference honors with Donavan Mutin being named Defensive Player of the Week and Marcus Jones earning Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Mutin, a junior linebacker from Spring, Texas, forced two fumbles in Saturday's 31-24 overtime victory against East Carolina, including the game-clincher on the Pirates' second play of extra time to seal Houston's sixth consecutive win.

Jones, a senior cornerback from Enterprise, Alabama, recorded a 98-yard kick return touchdown in Houston's one-score victory. The play was the longest in TDECU Stadium history. With the result, Jones became the first player to record a punt and kick return touchdown at TDECU Stadium.

Houston improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in American play with the win, setting the stage for a pivotal matchup against No. 19/16 SMU at 6 p.m. Saturday inside TDECU Stadium. The game features two of the remaining three unbeaten teams in American Athletic Conference play.
