HOUSTON – For his work throughout the 2021-22 season, University of Houston Men’s Basketball Head Coach Kelvin Sampson was named to the Werner Ladder Naismith Coach of the Year Late Season Watch List.
Now in his eighth season at Houston, Sampson has led the 14th-ranked Cougars to a 21-4 overall record and 10-2 mark in American Athletic Conference play to stand atop the league.
Houston rattled off 12 consecutive wins earlier this season and recently held the nation’s second-longest active home winning streak at 37 games inside the Fertitta Center.
After losing four starters from last year’s NCAA Final Four squad, his 2021-22 team’s impressive accomplishments have come after losing Preseason All-American Athletic Conference First-Team guard Marcus Sasser and sophomore guard Tramon Mark to season-ending injuries in December 2021.
Now in his 33rd season as a collegiate head coach, Sampson has compiled a 688-338 overall record with a 188-68 mark at Houston. He is one of only 16 coaches to lead multiple schools to the NCAA Final Four and ranks as the winningest coach in Houston career history with a .733 career winning percentage.
Sampson was joined on the Watch List by Mark Adams (Texas Tech), John Calipari (Kentucky), Ed Cooley (Providence), Scott Drew (Baylor), Mark Few (Gonzaga), Steve Forbes (Wake Forest), Greg Gard (Wisconsin), Jeff Linder (Wyoming), Tommy Lloyd (Arizona), Bob McKillop (Davidson), Matt McMahon (Murray State), Bruce Pearl (Auburn), Shaka Smart (Marquette) and Brad Underwood (Illinois).
