Astros Trade for a Reliever from the Royals

The Houston Astros have acquired RHP Dylan Coleman from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for RHP Carlos Mateo, Astros General Manager Dana Brown announced today.

Coleman, 27, has made 96 Major League appearances over the past three seasons (2021-23) for the Royals, primarily as a reliever. For his Major League career, he is 5-4 with a 3.88 ERA with 57 walks and 99 strikeouts in 92.1 innings pitched. He has allowed just 70 hits in his 92.2 career innings for a .209 opponents batting average.

Coleman (6-5, 230 lbs.) had an outstanding season for the Royals in 2022, going 5-2 in 68 relief appearances with a 2.78 ERA while allowing just 47 hits in 68.0 innings pitched for a .194 opponents batting average. In 2023, he split time between Triple A Omaha and the Majors, appearing in 23 games overall for the Royals (0-2, 8.84 ERA, 18.1 IP, 18 ER). Additionally, Coleman has hurled 3.0 scoreless innings in his three career appearances vs. the Astros, all coming in 2022.

Mateo, 19, appeared in seven games for the Astros Florida Complex League team in 2023, going 0-0 with a 5.19 ERA (5ER/8.2IP) with four walks and 12 strikeouts. In 2022, Mateo was 2-1 in 10 appearances (4 starts) in the Dominican Summer League with a 2.63 ERA (8ER/27.1IP).

As a result of today's transaction, the Astros now have 39 players on the 40-man roster
