Counting Down to Astros and the Trade Deadline 2024

Chris Gordy and Ross Villarreal talk all things Houston Astros ahead of the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline. What's realistic for Dana Brown and the Astros to acquire? Will they add a pitcher? A first baseman? We discuss it all, as well as a discussion with Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.

Astros Avoid Sweep By Athletics, Texans One Week Away From HOF Game

Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up recap the Houston Astros avoiding the sweep against the Oakland Athletics with Wednesday's 8-1 victory. Hunter Brown earned the win, allowing one run on eight hits and a walk with eight strikeouts over six innings. Brian Bogusevic, former Astros outfielder and Space City Home Network analyst, joins to discuss the Astros concluding their .500 road trip with the lead in the AL West and returning to Houston to host the Los Angeles Dodgers for a weekend series starting Friday. Stan and Chris also talk with KPRC reporter Aaron Wilson about the altercation at Texans training camp and preview the HOF Game.

NFL Insider Aaron Wilson: Stefon Diggs 'Had Nothing To Do With The Altercation' At Texans Practice

KPRC reporter Aaron Wilson joins Next Up as the Houston Texans have a scheduled day off from training camp Thursday, one week away from the 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game against the Chicago Bears. However, on Wednesday, day six and the second practice with full pads, there was a heated exchange between the first team offense and defense following defensive back Jimmie Ward's hit on wide receiver Stefon Diggs. The altercation intensified after cornerback Derek Stingley knocked tight end Dalton Schultz to the ground as Schultz was walking away. Diggs "had nothing to do with the altercation," Wilson said. Despite tempers flaring briefly, the Texans defense has performed well at training camp. "I like Jalen Pitre at nickel," and the Texans "have great depth" in the secondary. Wilson is also impressed by the athletic ability of defensive end Danielle Hunter. "Big sack numbers are possible for [Hunter] with Will Anderson Jr. on the other side."

Brian Bogusevic: 'Pitching Has To Be Prioritized' For The Astros Ahead Of MLB Trade Deadline

Brian Bogusevic, former Astros outfielder and Space City Home Network analyst, joins Next Up after the Astros avoided the sweep against the Oakland Athletics with Wednesday's 8-1 victory. "Oakland has been the best offense in baseball in the month of July," Bogusevic said. Hunter Brown earned the win, allowing one run on eight hits and a walk with eight strikeouts over six innings. The Astros conclude their .500 road trip holding the lead in the AL West. The MLB trade deadline is approaching on July 30, and while the Astros could use another productive bat in the lineup, especially at first base, Bogusevic says "pitching has to be prioritized" with multiple starters still on the injured list. "You have to add a pitcher" because "you're going to need more than" five healthy starters, and "I don't know if the Astros have the prospect capital to make a bunch of moves."

Astros Drop Series To Athletics, Jake Bloss Gets Shelled, Things Get Chippy At Texans Training Camp

Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up recap the Houston Astros dropping the three-game road series to the Oakland Athletics following Tuesday's 8-2 loss. Jake Bloss started on the mound, allowing five runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five over four innings. The Astros have a chance to end their three-game losing streak with Hunter Brown pitching on Wednesday. Stan and Chris also review the sixth day of Texans training camp and how things got a little heated on the second day of full pads.

An Effective Pass Rush Will Be The Key To The Success Of The Texans Defense

Stan Norfleet of Next Up comments on the Houston Texans defense as the sixth day of training camp concludes. Defensive ends Jonathan Greenard and Will Anderson Jr. led the defensive line last season, combining for 19.5 sacks. Greenard signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings in March. However, the Texans signed Danielle Hunter to a two-year, $49 million deal a day later, effectively swapping 2023 sack leaders with the Vikings. Hunter gives the Texans a strong pass-rushing duo alongside Anderson, the current NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. With the addition of Denico Autry, the defensive line, especially the edge rush, will be the pillar of success for the Texans defense in the 2024 season.
