Astros Claim a Pair of Players Off Waivers

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros have claimed right-handed pitcher Miguel Diaz off waivers from the Detroit Tigers and outfielder Cooper Hummel from the San Francisco Giants. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Astros transferred RHP Luis Garcia and RHP Penn Murfee to the 60-Day IL. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager Dana Brown.

Diaz will join the Astros active roster and take the place of RHP Dylan Coleman, who was optioned to Triple A Sugar Land following last night’s game. Hummel has been assigned to Triple A Sugar Land.

Diaz, 29, made 12 appearances (three starts) for the Tigers last season, posting a 0.64 ERA (1ER/14IP) with 16 strikeouts, a 0.929 WHIP and .163 opponent batting average. He’s appeared at the Major League level in parts of six seasons, with the San Diego Padres (2017-19, ‘21) and the Tigers (2022-23). He has gone 6-2 with a 4.84 ERA (68ER/126.1IP) and .232 opponent batting average through 87 games (8 starts) in the Majors.

Hummel, 29, spent the majority of last season with Triple A Tacoma in the Seattle Mariners organization, batting .262 (95x363) with 27 doubles, six triples, eight homers, 47 RBI, 26 stolen bases and an .844 OPS in 104 games. He has appeared at the Major League level in each of the last two seasons, with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022 (66 games) and the Mariners in 2023 (10 games). With Triple A Tacoma last season, he made 54 appearances at first base, 37 at left field and 12 at catcher.

Garcia, 27, is recovering from Tommy John surgery performed on May 19, 2023. He has gone 28-19 with a 3.61 ERA (141ER/352IP) in 69 games (63 starts) through parts of four Major League seasons with the Astros.

Murfee, 29, was claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Braves on March 27. He is currently recovering from a UCL procedure performed in June 2023. Murfee recorded a 1.29 ERA (2ER/14IP) with 16 strikeouts, a 1.07 WHIP and a .109 opponent batting average in 16 games with the Seattle Mariners in 2023.
