HOUSTON, TX - Astros first baseman José Abreu, a three-time All-Star and MVP, has accepted an option to the Astros Spring Training facility in West Palm Beach, FL, General Manager Dana Brown announced today.
The Abreu option will take effect tomorrow, May 1.
“We met with José on this, and we both agree that this move will be good for him and for the team in the long run,” Brown said. “We are confident that a change of scenery and a new environment will help him get his rhythm and timing back. José is a team-first guy, and we applaud him for this. We know what this guy can do, and we’re confident in his determination and work ethic.”
Abreu, who has struggled in the early part of this season, finished the 2023 season strong, leading the American League in RBI from Sept. 1st on with 28 in 26 just games. He also shined in the postseason for the Astros, with four home runs and 13 RBI in 11 games with a .945 OPS. In Spring Training this season, Abreu hit .308 (8x26) in 10 games with a home run while posting a .919 OPS.
The Astros will make a corresponding move prior to tomorrow’s game.
