It Appears That The Astros Are Battling With Three Teams For José Abreu

The biggest bat on the free agent market at first base is José Abreu and the Astros have been linked to him since the market opened. Today over at The Athletic (subscription required), Ken Rosenthal says that Abreu might have a preference of playing in Florida, while the Astros and Padres are also after him.

"José Abreu remains a target of the AstrosPadres and other clubs, but one executive with a pulse on the market senses that the free-agent first baseman is intrigued by the possibility of playing for one of the two Florida teams.

Abreu, a native of Cuba who turns 36 on Jan. 29, owns a home south of Miami. The question is whether the Marlins or Rays, two of the game’s most reluctant spenders, would be willing to meet his price. Abreu also might prefer to join a team that is perceived to be a stronger World Series contender."

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. In the end, like it usually does, the team with the best dollar offer is probably going to land the player.
